Civil Society Regional Forum: “CREATING JOBS TO FIGHT POVERTY AND STRENGTHEN DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE”
Buenos Aires , Argentina - September 6-7, 2005
The goal of the Civil Society Regional Forum is to stimulate discussion and the exchange of ideas among civil society organizations (CSO) that actively monitor the Summits of the Americas mandates and carry out activities related to the topics of the inter-American agenda. Likewise, the Forum also has the objective to present, to OAS Member States, the recommendations generated by civil society in efforts to support the work of the National Summit Coordinators in preparation for the IV Summit of the Americas to be held in Mar del Plata , Argentina in November, 2005. more...

Fading green? Environmental politics in the Mercosur free trade agreement

| ... The ECOS Foundation, the only regional environmental NGO specifically created to accompany Mercosur processes, has been the most consistent environmentalist participant in SGT 6 meetings. Even ECOS, however, insists that the participatory openings must be increased and improved for SGT 6 to function well and to justify NGO expenses in attending meetings (Leichner Reynal 2002).8 Mercosur has no other forums that invite environmentalists' participation. The most likely alternative, the Economic and Social Consultative Forum (FCES), is only an advisory body and is even more heavily dominated by business and labor actors (Grandi and Bizzozero 1998) (FCES 2001). Regional environmentalists interested in the intersection of trade and the environment have begun to turn their attention much more to the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) or to specific transboundary issues (see Hochstetler 2002a). ... |

The general objetive of this initiative is to orientate the formulation of national and regional trade politics, towards the sustainable Development; across the accomplishment of an regional evaluation of sustainability impact of the productive chain of the soybean ( Glicine max), giving tools the drawees of decision for the sustainability of the current practices and productive and commercial trends. This objetive is consistent with the mandates of the Process of Summits of the Americas.
The Intention is to realize an Evaluation of Impact of regional Sustainability of the productive chain of the soybean, considering aspects relating to the environmental, economic and social subject matter, generating a solid and deepened diagnostic information. more...

| WTO Dispute Settlement – An African View |

The Trade Law Centre for Southern Africa (tralac) is hosting a Conference on WTO Dispute Settlement on 31 March 2005.
The event will have a predominantly multilateral focus in examining the role and participation of African Countries in WTO dispute settlement proceedings. Africa's limited participation in the WTO dispute settlement system to date and ways in which Africa might engage the dispute settlement system to its advantage, will receive attention.
Participation in the event will be of benefit to trade policy formulators, government officials, the business community, lawyers and academia – from across the entire African continent. more...

FTAA – TRADE NEGOTIATIONS COMMITTEE
JOINT COMMUNIQUÉ OF CO-CHAIRS |
| The Co-Chairs of the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) held consultations in Washington, D.C. February 22-23, 2005, on guidance for developing a common and balanced set of rights and obligations to be provided to the negotiators, as provided in the Miami Declaration. This meeting built on discussions among countries participating in the FTAA negotiations that have taken place since the Seventeenth TNC meeting in Puebla, Mexico in February last year.
The Co-Chairs have continued to make progress and are optimistic about the results of this meeting. We will meet again on March 29 and 30. The Co-Chairs will consult informally with delegations of the other FTAA countries. |

Worldwide events marking Kyoto Protocol's entry into force |
The Kyoto Protocol entered into force on 16 February 2005. To mark this date, some Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, as well as institutions and organizations, have planned events and other activities. In order to assist those who wish to attend or promote their activities, the UNFCCC secretariat has compiled a list of known events and activities. Japan held a commemorative symposium and global video conference on 16 February 2005 to celebrate the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol. These events took place in the historic city of Kyoto where the Protocol was originally adopted in 1997. |
